How do I Speed Up My Metabolism?

Your metabolism is a process where the body converts food into a fuel source, being energy. A unit of energy is measured by a calorie. One calorie consumed is one unit of energy.

The body does one of two things to that unit of energy you just consumed. It either metabolizes it via anabolism, or it metabolizes it via catabolism. Sounds complicated, but breaking it down, when you consume food your body either converts the calories into cells or tissue (such as fat) to be stored, or will use that energy to break down cells to fuel the body. Therefore, if you consume excess calories which your body doesnt require, it is forced to store the calories, and as a result you put on weight.


How to Speed Up Your Metabolism

There are a lot of buzz words when it comes to losing weight, such as calories, optimal fat burning heart rate and metabolism. My aim here is to define metabolism and explain how you can speed up your metabolism.

What is metabolism?

When you exercise aerobically, your heart rate increases, your body temperature rises and you body calls on its reserves to fuel the exercise. As long as you don’t go into the anaerobic range where you body uses glycogen to fuel your effort (such as when you sprint for an extended period to catch the bus), you body will convert calories into energy, drawing on fat stores.

Exercising on the other hand requires the body to dip into its store of energy and burn calories, resulting in weight loss. Studies have shown that a pound of muscle actually burns more calories that a pound of fat. Therefore, the more lean muscle you have, the more calories are naturally burned before the body has to store the excess calories. You burn more calories even while sitting in front of the TV. So putting on more muscle (not necessarily bulking up, but developing toned lean muscle), you are speeding up your metabolism.

One of the best ways to burn calories and increase lean muscle is to do interval training. Rather than just jogging or cycling at a slow to medium pace, you increase the tempo for 30 seconds to a minute, depending on your fitness. This causes your heart rate to spike, and the body dips deeper into its energy store, burning calories at a quicker rate.

Problems with Dieting

Many people have tried dieting to reduce calorie intake, which works to reduce weight initially. However, the body is amazing at protecting you, so as you cut back calorie intake, it conserves energy and becomes more efficient. If you diet too heavily, your body conserves energy for the most important bodily functions and you become tired when exercising, or in normal daily life. As you calorie intact increases, you body stores the energy ready for the next famine, resulting in weight gain. This results in what is know as the yo-yo diet, dropping weight just to put it back on again.

Therefore, if you want to speed up your metabolism, increase you lean muscle mass, and maintain a regular exercise program to ensure that the excess energy is being burned before it has a chance of being stored as fat.
